Pediatric and Adolescent Gynecology

Children’s National is the only hospital in the Washington, DC, area participating in the Oncofertility Consortium, an interdisciplinary research network of doctors, scientists, and scholars with a shared goal to preserve fertility options for cancer survivors. We are one of the hospitals nationwide with an Institutional Review Board (IRB) approved process for ovarian tissue freezing (cryopreservation), an experimental fertility preservation option for young women.

Working closely with the Oncology team, the pediatric gynecology team offers full counseling for patients, educating and empowering families to make informed decisions about treatment. Children’s doctors explain the age-appropriate options for fertility preservation for girls and young women so we can help protect patient choices about starting a family in the future. We offer ovarian tissue freezing, gonadopexy (moving the ovaries away from the planned radiation field) as well as conservative surgery for ovarian and pelvic tumors.

The Clinic for Adolescent and Adult Pediatric-Onset Urology (CAPITUL)

Through the Clinic for Adolescent and Adult Pediatric-Onset Urology (CAPITUL), headed by Dr. Michael Hsieh, Children’s National will soon be the only hospital in the Washington, DC, area participating in testicular tissue freezing (cryopreservation) as part of the Oncofertility Consortium. We will soon be  one of the few hospitals nationwide with an ethics board-approved process for testicular tissue freezing (cryopreservation), an experimental fertility preservation option for young men.

Working closely with the Oncology team, the CAPITUL team offers full counseling for patients, educating and empowering families to make informed decisions about treatment. Children’s doctors explain the age-appropriate options for fertility preservation so we can help protect patient choices about starting a family in the future. We will soon offer testicular tissue freezing for boys about to undergo chemotherapy and radiation therapy that may impact their fertility.
